Induktive Lasten
Beim Schalten von Magnetventilen und anderen induktiven Lasten können Lichtbögen mit Spannungsspitzen bis zu einigen Tausend Volt entstehen. Sie werden während des Schaltvorgangs durch die in der Spule gespeicherte Energie verursacht und können den Kontakt durch Materialverdampfung und Materialwanderung zerstören. Beim Schalten induktiver Gleichspannungslasten entstehen intensive Lichtbögen. Dadurch werden die Relaiskontakte stark belastet und verschleißen schnell. Der Einsatz von Leistungsrelais kann die Entstehung solcher Lichtbögen zuverlässig unterdrücken. Ergänzend wird eine externe Löschbeschaltung empfohlen. Auch beim Schalten induktiver Wechselstromlasten entstehen Lichtbögen, die allerdings meist beim nächsten Nulldurchgang des Laststroms von selbst verlöschen. Je größer die geschalteten induktiven Lasten sind, desto stärker sind die entstehenden Lichtbögen. In Anwendungen mit induktiven Lasten über 2 A sollten daher Leistungsrelais statt herkömmlicher Signalrelais eingesetzt werden.
