Elevate tensioni DC
I relè di commutazione possono annullare solo tensioni DC e correnti relativamente ridotte, perché manca il passaggio zero per l'annullamento dell'arco. Il valore massimo di corrente continua dipende anche dalla tensione di commutazione e dalle condizioni di progettazione quali la spaziatura tra contatti e la velocità di apertura contatto.
Nel caso di carichi DC induttivi non amplificati, l'energia immagazzinata nel carico induttivo può accendere un arco permanente che passa la corrente attraverso i contatti aperti. Questo causa un'usura del contatto estremamente elevata, con conseguente malfunzionamento prematuro. Tali carichi elevati possono essere commutati in modo affidabile se si utilizzano accoppiatori a relè elettromeccanici e relè a stato solido appositamente progettati per questa applicazione. Questi, ad esempio, sono dotati di magneti di spegnimento integrati o di aperture a contatto grande, che riducono notevolmente l'usura dei contatti. Di seguito sono riportate speciali soluzioni di relè per la commutazione di tensioni DC e corrente elevate.
