Hohe Gleichspannungen
Schaltrelais können nur relativ kleine Gleichspannungen und -ströme abschalten, weil hier der Nulldurchgang zum Löschen des Lichtbogens fehlt. Der maximale Gleichstromwert ist außerdem von der Schaltspannung sowie von konstruktiven Gegebenheiten wie z. B. Kontaktabstand und Kontaktöffnungsgeschwindigkeit abhängig.
Bei ungedämpften induktiven Gleichstromlasten kann die in der Induktivität gespeicherte Energie einen stehenden Lichtbogen zünden, der den Strom über die geöffneten Kontakte weiterleitet. Dadurch wird ein extrem hoher Kontaktverschleiß verursacht, der frühzeitige Ausfälle nach sich zieht. Solch hohe Lasten können zuverlässig geschaltet werden, wenn speziell für diesen Anwendungsfall konzipierte Koppelrelais und Halbleiterrelais verwendet werden. Diese verfügen z. B. über eingebaute Blasmagneten oder große Kontaktöffnungen, was den Kontaktverschleiß erheblich minimiert.
