Suppressordioden arbeiten ähnlich wie herkömmliche Zehner-Dioden. Nach Überschreiten einer, vom Hersteller eingestellten Durchbruchspannung, wird die Diode innerhalb von 10-100ps leitend. Die Suppressordioden haben gegenüber den Zehner-Dioden eine höhere Strombelastbarkeit und eine kürzere Ansprechzeit.
